Paul is the best man in a wedding, watching the post-ceremony proceedings with an air of detachment and melancholy. While he's surrounded by an atmosphere of love and happiness, he's clearly not quite feeling it himself.
But as he tries to avoid the crowd, he meets Jessie, and the conversation between two strangers eventually turns into a spark.
Writer-director Joe Gillette's short romantic dramedy is a sweet, witty slice of life that focuses on how people really truly connect to one another. In a genre where the "meet cute" is often a little too clever, facile and clouded in fantasy, this short is well-scripted, with an eye to explore genuine emotional resonance, especially among ordinary people who struggle with simple everyday awkwardness.
With such honest, compelling dialogue, the performances stand out, achieving a verisimilitude emphasized by the film's minimalist visual approach. Essentially a long conversation taking place between two people, the camera keeps the attention tightly on the two actors, giving the audience the privilege of watching two people come out of their shells and spark a connection between two people.
"Reception" is simple and elegant in execution, but the ideas and feelings underlying this small-scale gem are messy, complicated, vulnerable and compelling. Open-hearted and sincere, it just may inspire viewers to look at life through the lens of opportunity -- and expand horizons in their own everyday way.

One thing that is really striking is the number of people here who say that this is/was a brilliant conversation... When I hear those comments, I have to openly wonder where conversation has been and where it is going, because in effect the conversation between these two is beyond awkward and not at all flowing well. While the truths expressed give insights into their characters, the reality regarding the awkwardness of this conversation shows just how much the true art of conversation has been lost....

Oh my gosh I am fangirling! I found this short film at random and was completely shocked. In all my years, out of all the films and books, I have never found such a organic and adorably awkward conversation. It was beautiful, and the pacing was perfect, each pause purposeful and natural. I felt like one of the guests who was creepily watching their interaction from the side. Within seconds, I was way too invested in these believable, complex characters and wanted them to find happiness together. It almost made me cry, and never has a short film touched me like this. I didn't want it to be over, and now I will be rewatching it and forcing it upon everyone I know. They don't know whats to come. Mwahaha. Thank you.

I had a good buddy from when we were 14 years old to 19. His name was Murray. We didn’t go to the same school but we lived in the same town and his mother and mine knew each other through church. This would be the early 60’s. We’d swim at the local pool and meet up an knock around kinda stuff. He acted more mature than me. I think it was that his Dad had died before we met. He had an older sister and an older brother. Thinking now he was probably an “accident”. He was “feisty” too. That’s one of the things i liked about him. But we never had an argument either. In grade 10 I had a girlfriend and she had a best girlfriend Judy. One day during Christmas holiday when my girlfriend was off with her mom and dad one day and Murray and I were knocking around i got the ideal to call up Judy’s. I called and she was alone at home (she was a single child and folks were at work) and I suggested Murray and I visit and she said OK. We would be 15 years old so we must have walked and that would have taken 3/4 of an hour. When we got their Murray became a total tease to Judy. And Judy got totally kurt back to him. Murray would open the fridge door and say “Don’t you have any Coke?”. To which July would say, “Why don’t you go home, I’m sure you have lots there”... stuff like that. This went on for the afternoon. I was embarrassed. A week or two laters what do I see? I see Murray (who went to a different high school) walking Judy home from school! Pretty soon they were dating and for several years afterword we would double date and go to school dances. I remember we went to see “Goldfinger” at the University Theatre in Toronto. Murray left school earlier than me because he was more mature and knew he had to make his way in the world. He helped me get a couple of jobs with him as a grocery kid. This was before fast food places and malls and there were seldom places for kids to work. Murray was a hard worker, probably the best guy there. Now I’m coming to the end of the story. When I was around 18 Murray called me and said that he and Judy were going to get married and he wanted me to be his best man! I was shocked. Like I told you, I was a kid still in high school. I was immature. Now I am ashamed now at what I said. I told him no. I told him I wouldn’t know what to do. I told him I didn’t want the responsibility. Murray hung up on me. In Aug 1968 they got married. His older brother was his best man. I was not invited. This is one of the perhaps 10 or 15 things that I am really am ashamed of and I wish I could have changed. I can explain it by immaturity but I wish I knew then that there was only one thing I could do. This was an honour he was giving me and I turned him down. We never really spoke for 50 years! Then a few years ago he was driving by our mail box. He would have been driving to my house or maybe just an accident but he recognized me. I heard this old geezer (like myself) teasing me “did I know how to park” ... I thought who is this guy bugging me and then recognized him and his wise guy attitude. We joined in his car in front of my house for an hour or 2. He told me he was sick and had only a couple of years to live. He was right. We talked about a lot of things. His old home was just down the street actually. This story is getting long.... One of the things I apologized for was turning down his request for me to be best man. And it is still one of my great regrets. Murray was true to his word and passed soon after this. Since then I connect with his wife Judy... their marriage lasted til he died... almost 50 years. I met his daughter too. He told his daughter that I was his best friend as a kid and I felt honoured. He would have been my best buddy as well. I may have let him down at that one occasion but it can be said that I introduced him to his life long wife... see you soon Murray!

I would like a part two where she says "before we dance though, if anyone asks, you have to say I'm your girlfriend and that we've been together for a year"....and while dancing the best friend and ex girlfriend do ask...and then they do the math in their heads and everyone freaks out...the best friend and ex argue about his infidelities', then they unknowingly bring up their own infidelities', would be a great part 2.
